5.0 out of 5 stars holy cow!, December 30, 2013

By Decorating Queen

I bought this after a diagnosis of periodontal disease. I haven't flossed regularly, to my shame, and felt like I needed to amass all of the necessary tools to do a better job taking care of my teeth and gums. This appliance has changed my life. First of all, it cleans your teeth better than anything except a dental hygienist. I was stunned the first time I used it. Wow. Secondly, it really helps break up hardened plaque between teeth, so after about a week of use, when I started flossing (yes, I do it now...), I was able to really get a good routine going. Plus, it whitens your teeth by getting rid of stains. What else could you ask for?

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it!, October 7, 2013

By ali

My friend had told me a couple years ago that when she got her Sonicare it was "life changing". Of course, I just laughed at her. Well, about a month ago I decided that I would give it a try. She was right! I love these tooth brushes! They give a 'dentist cleaning' feeling every single time! I loved this brand so much that I bought my children Sonicare toothbrushes as well! I 100% recommend this product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another new fan for an excellent product., August 13, 2012

By Mary Rice "callmetiggy"

My husband got braces last year and has been complaining ever since about how toothbrushes can dislodge his wires, which then poke his gums all night. The rest of us suffer for it the next morning! :-) I therefore took it upon myself to look into the Philips Sonicare, which most of us have seen in the shops or in advertising. After all, how could anybody miss that price tag? I had often wondered aloud if any toothbrush could be worth the money it cost and concluded that there was no way it could be worth it.
I lost my skepticism when I bought a Clarisonic Mia2 facial brush, which also uses sonic technology. I was extremely pleased with the results of that purchase and concluded that the Mia2 was worth every penny of its high price. I was busy congratulating myself on making the investment in myself while admiring my complexion, when the lightbulb went off above my head. I jumped onto Amazon, shopped around, and found this Philips Sonicare HX6733/90 Healthy White 3 Mode Platinum Edition Rechargeable Toothbrush 2-Pack Bundle. The price was less than I had expected and thus a happy surprise, so I immediately purchased the set through Amazon Prime and had it in my hands in two days.
I am a longtime tea drinker with very sensitive gums. Despite a lifetime of excellent dental care and virtuous brushing and flossing, my teeth had a yellowish staining that wouldn't go away. My gums won't tolerate whitening treatments, so I concluded that I would just have to live with it. As I'm in my late 30s, I also thought that some of the yellowish color could be a result of natural aging and thinning enamel and didn't think any more about it. When I received the Sonicare, I read the packaging and indulged myself in fantasizing that it might MAYBE whiten my teeth, but I didn't really expect that it would.
I am very pleased to report that the Sonicare DID whiten my teeth, and in less than the week that the Sonicare advertising suggested that it would take. After only two days of usage, my teeth are not only noticeably whiter, they sparkle! I was so excited by the results that I decided that I had to review this product immediately to sing its praises. I really believed that my teeth would remain somewhere between ivory and alabaster in color from here to eternity, and I was beyond delighted to see that they have begun to return to their original whiteness with no extra effort on my part aside from my usual oral hygiene routine.
I was startled when I first put the toothbrush in my mouth, as it vibrates so quickly that it doesn't feel quite "right". The toothbrush head is very small and slim, which is great for getting into all of the crevices in your mouth. I used the Clean and Whiten mode (there are three, Sensitive, Clean, and Clean and
Whiten) right from the start, just because I didn't notice the other two modes until my husband pointed them out this morning. Despite having sensitive gums, I did not feel that the DiamondClean brush heads were too harsh or that the cycle itself was too harsh. I haven't actually timed it, but the brush shuts itself off after the recommended two minutes of brushing. There is a slight pause every thirty seconds or so. My husband is a clean freak and flung the packaging and manual in the recycling bin yesterday, so I'm afraid I can't be specific as to whether or not it only does this in Clean and Whiten mode or in all modes. After brushing, I flossed thoroughly as always, and there seemed to be the usual minor amount of plaque after brushing as compared to the other electric toothbrush I had been using before the Sonicare. My one minor complaint is that it is very uncomfortable to brush your tongue with the Sonicare.
My husband commented that the Sonicare brush is very gentle on his braces, but he won't know exactly how well it works on his teeth until the braces come off. He is pleased overall and interested in learning more about the system, and as I said, I am now a major fan who has already bored several colleagues with how amazing I think this product is. I am planning to update this review in a few weeks' time with whether or not the Sonicare was able to whiten the backs of my teeth, which have the most staining from tea.
The travel cases, chargers, and UV Sanitizer are gravy on top of the brush itself, as we have a small bathroom and travel a lot. Even without any of the extras, this product was worth every penny and more.
Thank you very much for reading my review!
Edited to add: It has been awhile (almost 7 months) since I bought the Philips Sonicare, and I still love it. I had promised to add to this review as to whether or not the toothbrush worked on the stains on the backs of my teeth. It took several months for me to see results here, and I am not sure why, as the Sonicare worked on the the front of my teeth within two days. Maybe I have improper brushing techniques in place? Thinner enamel on the backs on my teeth? Either way, they are whiter than they have ever been, which matters to nobody but me, I am sure. :-) My husband still has his braces, but he is still happy with the Sonicare in the meantime (no complaints = happiness for him!) I will update this review with his final verdict on its effectiveness for him in a few months' time, when his braces come off. Thank you again for reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great toothbrush, only minor annoyances, February 7, 2013

By JanineK22

First off, this toothbrush cleans my teeth well, which is the most important factor. My teeth feel dentist-clean after using the brush. The package comes with two toothbrush handles and two brush heads. It also includes a stand with a UV cleaning box (with spots for both brush heads) and charger peg. It also includes a travel charger and two travel cases. When I first used the toothbrush, I thought I was going to hate it because the vibration is aversive when you first use it. I used the EasyStart feature to get used to the brush - it gradually increases the vibration intensity over 14 brushings - and now it doesn't bother me. The brush also features Quadpacer, so it pauses every 30s to alert you to switch the quadrant of mouth you're brushing and the brush shuts off after the full 2 minutes so you know you're done.
My critiques are minor, but they may change whether you buy the HealthyWhite brush or look at the FlexCare:
--First, the set comes with two handles, but the charger/UV stand only has a single charging peg. It does come with an additional travel charger, but it's pretty ridiculous to have both bathroom plugs used for toothbrushes. As the handles hold charge for a couple of weeks, it's not a deal breaker - you can store the other brush somewhere else, but I find it annoying to have to trade off using the single charging peg with my husband and try to remember whose handle is whose.
--Second, the brush has three seetings: Clean, Sensitive, and Clean+White. I usually want to use Clean+White, but in order to reach this setting, I have to press the on button three times EACH time I use the brush - it defaults back to Clean every time it's used. It's hard to confirm which setting I'm on because I can't see the handle while it's in my mouth and if I take the toothbrush out to see the setting, the toothpaste splatters all over. I wish the brush would remember the last used setting.
So, overall, love the toothbrushes and if you can live with those minor complaints, you will, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great, February 1, 2013

By Stephen M. Charme

My wife and I have used Sonicare toothbrushs for years, and recently upgraded to this model from the Sonicare Elite so that we could use the DiamondClean brush heads. It was much more economical to buy this two pack than to buy one of the more expensive Sonicare handles (Flexcare, Flexcare Plus, or Diamond Clean) for each of us. While those handles all claim to have an assortment of additional features, using the DiamondClean brush head with this handle is all we need for good dental care.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great toothbrush!!, February 6, 2013

By mciurej "mciurej"

My husband and I purchased this set after using the Spin Brush for a few years. I love that these have a smaller head and reach further back in my mouth to clean all of my molars. My mouth feels much cleaner after using it, I noticed this after the first use! The reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is I haven't noticed any whitening as it claims. My husband doesn't either. We've been using it them for about 2 weeks now. I do find it a little frustrating that it shuts itself off after it cycles through 6 times on the whitening mode but it's easy to turn it back on. You also won't want to turn it on until you have it in your mouth, otherwise you may lose your toothpaste as this toothbrush has got some power!! Overall I think it's a great toothbrush and would recommend it to anyone! Just don't have any delusions that you will see a difference in your teeth being whiter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product and price, July 26, 2012

By Yiflin

My dentist said my gum is in a poor condition, and recommended me to use an electronic toothbrush.
After some researching work, I found Sonicare is more effective than Oral B according to other people's review.
This product is a good deal.

I bought this product for me and my husband. It was shipped fast by Fedex.
Now we have been using this products for a few days. The teeth are SUPER clean! I use the clean and white mode for the teeth, and sensitive mode for the gum. The brush head is ok, not as tough as mentioned by some user. Though I also bought a set of the sensitive brush head as a beginner if using the toothbrush. (I think not necessary to do that) I have another appointment with the dentist 2 months later, I wish the gum's condition could get a lot better this time....
Will update then...

4.0 out of 5 stars Worked for 6months, now UV sanitizer does not turn on, September 6, 2013

By Sharron Valk "whitetigga"

Battery life is great, but seems there is no warranty and the life of the product did not even last a year. So i went to their website and the 24/7 chat helped me to fix it. i just needed to wiggle the plastic piece around the blub.
Seems to be a well-made product but the brush heads are really expensive and that is how they are making the real money off these products!

This is awesome. I love the three settings as sometimes my teeth get sensitive and I can't use the whitening mode all the time. I also love the UV light for disinfecting. Great price too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pricey, but WORTH IT, December 26, 2013

By C.C.

I swear by these brushes. My older cadmium battery ones finally bit the dust and these are 100 times better and will last a lot longer. Articles out there will tell you that the black light doesn't make much difference in terms of killing bacteria, which is probably true, but I like using the black light and its compartment for two reasons, 1.) it keeps the brush contained so nothing in the bathroom will get on the brush (the bathroom is your dirtiest room in the house after all) and 2.) it dries the brush.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great purchase, November 21, 2013

By Chris Devlin

Overall very happy with the sonicare toothbrush. Charge lasts for a long time, when I travel for work I'm gone Sunday-Friday and I don't even need the travel charger, the battery on it lasts no problem. Never used an electric toothbrush before. Love how clean my teeth feel. Dentist recommended it. Nothing else to compare it to

5.0 out of 5 stars Brush away, brush away, brush away crud, October 8, 2013

By Richard S. Roberts "The Ricster"

This was not my first Sonicare purchase but it's been many years since I've used one. I drink coffee and therefore I get coffee stains on my teeth. My dental hygienist has been after me for the past several years to buy one and start using it again. Well, I decided to do it and the results speak for itself. No more stains and I have that totally clean feeling like I just left the dentist office after every brush. I bought this multi-pack for my kids. They look forward to brushing and I can see a difference in their smile already.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasure to use, August 20, 2013

By Natakali

I upgraded to this electric toothbrush from an Oral B one: no comparison, this is so much better. It seems a lot less abrasive than other electric toothbrushes I have used - my gums feel healthy and my teeth ultra clean. The timer is useful and makes me more disciplined about brushing my teeth thoroughly. I like the charging system and appreciate having the sanitizer, which not only cleans but provides a place to protect the brush head from dust when the toothbrush is not in use. The toothbrush base is easy to clean. The travel case is a little bulky, but still worthwhile. Definitely the best toothbrush I have had.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best investment for my dental care!, March 24, 2013

I totally made a great decision by purchasing this toothbrush. It takes a little getting used to if you've never used one before, but after you brush your teeth with this you will love the clean fresh feeling of your mouth! I know I will not go back to using a regular toothbrush again :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars what a great brush, February 22, 2013

By BV

We love it. I like it much better than the Oral B one we had before, the shape and size of the brush is a much better fit for me. We had regular toothbrushes in between the two electric ones, and there is no doubt, the electric ones are leaving you with a much cleaner feeling.
What I also underestimated is the pressure regulation that the electric ones do for you. My Dentist told me I was brushing to hard along the gum line and I actually managed to damage my enamel. This was the last push I needed to finally get rid of the "in between" regular toothbrushes again.

Product and technology

The brush head vibrates at hundreds of times per second, with the latest models at 31,000 strokes per minute. Rather than connecting to its charger with conductors, it utilizes inductive charging—the charger includes the primary winding of the voltage-reducing transformer and the fat handle of the brush includes the secondary winding. The replaceable head is also driven magnetically.

Clinical research

Individual clinical research has shown Sonicare toothbrushes to be more effective than comparable Oral-B electric toothbrushes in reduction of gingival inflammation and therefore improvement inperiodontal health.[1] However a 2004 review of 29 studies concluded that only electric toothbrushes with rotational/oscillation movement removed more plaque than other brushes when correctly used.[2] A second review found no clinical evidence for the dynamic fluid activity of the Sonicare toothbrush being more effective in plaque removal than an Oral-B oscillating/rotating electric toothbrush.[3] A 2007 study comparing the two found the rotation/oscillation brush to be more effective in single-use plaque reduction.[4]Individual studies have shown that Sonicare toothbrushes are more effective in plaque removal and reduction in gingivitis compared to manual toothbrushes.[5][6]

History

In 1987, David Giuliani, an entrepreneur with a background in electrical engineering, met with University of Washington professors Drs. David Engel and Roy Martin. They formed a new company named GEMTech to promote a dental hygiene device using a piezoelectric multimorph transducer. After several years of research and creating prototypes, the Sonicare toothbrush was introduced in November 1992 at a periodontal convention in Florida. In 1995, GEMTech changed its name to Optiva Corporation. In October 2000, Philips Domestic Appliances and Personal Care, a division of Philips, acquired Optiva Corporation. A few months later Optiva Corporation changed its name to Philips Oral Healthcare, Inc. By the end of 2001, Sonicare had become the number-one selling rechargeable power toothbrush in the United States.[7]In 2003, to improve Philips brand recognition in the US, Philips began rebranding the Sonicare toothbrush as "Philips Sonicare".

Sonicare Toothbrush Summerlin

A sonic electric toothbrush (Sonicare) and an oscillating/rotating electric brush (Braun Oral-B) were compared for efficacy in removing supragingival plaque, reducing gingival inflammation, reducing probing pocket depth (Pd) and improving probing attachment levels (PAL) in a 6-month, single-blind clinical trial. Sixty-six adults with early-moderate periodontitis (5-7 mm Pd in at least two quadrants) entered the study, and 54 completed the entire study. The Sonicare and Braun groups were equally matched for plaque scores, and balanced for age, race and gender. Plaque was scored using the Turesky, Gilmore and Glickman Index. Gingival inflammation was determined by the Papillary Bleeding Score (PBS) of Loesche. Probing depths and attachment levels were determined using a manual North Carolina probe. All measurements were recorded at baseline, 2, 4 and 6 months. The mean overall plaque scores improved in both the Sonicare and the Braun groups at each of the follow-up visits. Interproximal plaque scores also improved in both groups with time, and the mean differential Sonicare post-brushing score was significantly better than the Braun at the 6-month visit (t-test; p = 0.039). Gingival inflammation also decreased in both groups over the 6-month period, but the Sonicare group showed significantly superior PBS scores at 4 months (t-test; p = 0.002) and 6 months (p = 0.005). The percentage reduction in inflammation from baseline at 6 months was 31.9% for Sonicare and 18.1% for Braun. Probing depth scores followed a similar pattern, with the Sonicare showing a mean reduction of 0.84 mm (15.8%) from baseline at 6 months, and Braun showing a 0.39 mm (7.2%) reduction (p = 0.002). In the Sonicare group probing attachment levels improved by 8.6% (MANOVA; p = 0.01), but no PAL improvement was seen in the Braun group. Overall, this study demonstrates that long-term use of these two electric toothbrushes improves periodontal health in adult periodontitis patients, and that the Sonicare brush is superior to the Braun brush in reducing gingival inflammation and probing depth. Moreover, 6 months' use of Sonicare led to actual improvement in probing attachment levels of periodontal pockets.
